Flower Power!

I must have flowers, always and always.”
— Claude Monet

I love flowers! Who doesn’t? I am guessing you love flowers, too. Whether your vase is overflowing elegantly with a single variety or a lush, mixed bouquet that announces the season, flowers create a beautiful focal point and change the energy of a space. They are a delight for the senses. They miraculously lift your spirits. They personalize and elevate an occasion. They fill a room with their glorious scent. They can create a sense of calm or put a smile on your face. Flowers are nature’s masterpieces.

Indulgence or necessity? Flowers have the power to instantly change the mood of your home. My home happens to be a big-boned, historic loft with lots of concrete, very high ceilings criss-crossed with pipes and conduit, and industrial vestiges of days when the building earned its keep as a commercial laundry. Flowers are a steady fixture at my house. To warm up the space, I love to have a colorful, generous arrangement in the center of the living room to pull focus. Sometimes, I like to stage them with a sculpture or sentimental object for dramatic effect. Just a few days ago, my daughter-in-law was over. Looking around, she asked, “What’s different?” I replied, “Nothing. But there aren’t any flowers in here right now!” She nodded and we both laughed. It’s no wonder that flowers are the puzzle piece that can create harmony in a space as well as become a signature element of your home.

Elevate your entertaining. Undoubtedly, flowers have the power to make an event even more special. You can do something as simple as placing a single arrangement next to your punch bowl or go full-on extravagant and dress up each room of your home using a cohesive floral motif throughout. Choose blooms to reflect your guest of honor or emphasize the theme of your event. You are only limited by your imagination!

Flower Inspo: LA CASA DE LAS FLORES! I just finished marathoning a deliciously decadent, new series called la Casa de las Flores (House of Flowers). Based in Mexico, you can find this dark comedy on Netflix. Immediately, I was mesmerized by the surreal  animated intro. Then came the riotous palette of the interiors and wardrobes rendered in fearless color. The lush and bold large scale botanical wall coverings and the amazing, oversized floral arrangements almost crowd the cast out of every scene. And, just like the fifth cast member in Sex and the City was New York itself, the flowers are stars in their own right in la Casa de las Flores. If you haven’t seen it, this series is a feast for the eyes. I’m obsessed! Check out the trailer here.

Where I love to buy flowers in Atlanta  I have a long-term romance addiction with flowers. Whether they come from florists or grocery stores, here are a few of my favorite sources that have consistently wonderful flowers.

  • Twelve. Hands down, Twelve is my most favorite florist ever. Located in Paris on Ponce, there is a reason why Twelve has been an Atlanta institution for over 20 years. Their artistic arrangements are filled with peonies, calla lilies, orchids, cabbage roses, lilacs… in surprisingly delightful color combinations wrapped in banana leaves. Guaranteed to wow.
  • Whole Foods. Their flowers are always amazing. They source locally as well as offer flowers sourced based on strict environmental and ethical trade criteria. Their roses are always stunners.
  • Trader Joe’s. Always great value and selection, stop in and pick up a bouquet to bring to a neighbor’s dinner party. Or grab multiple bundles of seasonal ‘stock’ sprays for $4 each to create a massive centerpiece. Or maybe you are in the mood for some sunflowers….

Flowers are always a good idea. Flowers just make life better.  Like the Chainsmokers say in their wistful song Roses:

I”ll be your daydream.
I’ll be your favorite things.

Oh, but you already are.
